Reachability Under Uncertainty

In this paper we introduce a new network reachability problem where the goal is to find the most reliable path between two nodes in a network, represented as a directed acyclic graph. Individual edges within this network may fail according to certain probabilities, and these failure probabilities may depend on the values of one or more hidden variables. This problem may be viewed as a generaliz...

A Combinatorial Approximation Algorithm for Selecting the Gate Sizes from Finite Sets in VLSI Circuits

In this paper, we consider a problem of VLSI design occurring in the routing phase. The problem is to determine the optimal size selection for the gates in a combinatorial circuit which uses the problem of finding a shortest path in an oriented acyclic graph for making certain updates between any two successive iterations. For this NP-hard problem, we give an approximation algorithm.

On the complexity of finding internally vertex-disjoint long directed paths

For two positive integers k and `, a (k × `)-spindle is the union of k pairwise internally vertexdisjoint directed paths with ` arcs between two vertices u and v. We are interested in the (parameterized) complexity of several problems consisting in deciding whether a given digraph contains a subdivision of a spindle, which generalize both the Maximum Flow and Longest Path problems. We obtain th...

On Finding Minimum Deadly Sets for Directed Networks

Given a set S of elements in a directed network that are initially faulty, an element becomes (functionally) faulty if all its in-neighbors or all its outneighbors are (functionally) faulty. A set S of initially faulty elements is called deadly if it causes the entire network to become faulty according to the above rule. We show that finding a minimum deadly set is NP-hard for arbitrary directe...

NP-Hardness and Fixed-Parameter Tractability of Realizing Degree Sequences with Directed Acyclic Graphs

In graph realization problems one is given a degree sequence and the task is to decide whether there is a graph whose vertex degrees match the given sequence. This realization problem is known to be polynomial-time solvable when the graph is directed or undirected. In contrast, we show NP-completeness for the problem of realizing a given sequence of pairs of nonnegative integers (representing i...
